Sophia Rahman
Pianist
On leaving YMS I read English at King’s College London and later gained my Masters from the RAM. Since then I have pursued a ‘portfolio career’; solo/chamber musician, teacher, festival director, adjudicator, trustee, sometime writer for publications such as The Arts Desk.
I regularly encounter YMS alumni in my performing life, be they my contemporaries (e.g. Rebecca Gilliver and Abigail Young) or those from different generations (Jonathan Morton, Cheryl Frances Hoad). With my coaching hat on I have encouraged several younger YMS graduates including Samuel Staples and Juliette and Tanja Roos.
I teach on the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s string masters course.
My discography includes Shostakovich’s concerto Op. 35 with Scottish Ensemble for Linn Records, over thirty chamber music discs, and I also made the first UK recording of Florence Price’s piano concerto with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, for Radio 3. My interest in class pianism began at Britten-Pears School for the legendary William Pleeth, who I’d first encountered at YMS, and continues to this day as class pianist for Steven Isserlis at IMS/Prussia Cove, a position I have held for ten years. I am currently Artistic Director of the Whittington International Chamber Music Festival.
