About Darius Brubeck Quartet
We are delighted to welcome Darius Brubeck and his quartet for an evening of world-class jazz. The son of jazz legend Dave Brubeck, Darius is internationally recognised not only as an extraordinary jazz pianist, but also as bandleader, performer and educator.
After studying ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University, USA and gaining an M.Phil. from Nottingham University, UK, Darius played with jazz greats such as Larry Coryell and led the New Brubeck Quartet. While living in South Africa, he founded the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and toured extensively with his bands across Africa, Europe and the USA. Now based in the UK, he leads the London-based Darius Brubeck Quartet and performs annually with Brubecks Play Brubeck. As a composer, Darius has written for orchestras, string trios and jazz ensembles with works being premiered by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and featured in the ABRSM piano syllabus.
The quartet features saxophonist Dave O’Higgins, a seasoned player, bandleader and educator who has performed and recorded with artists from Ray Charles to Jamie Cullum; bassist Matt Ridley, a versatile and innovative performer with worldwide experience and acclaimed albums as a bandleader; and drummer Wesley Gibbens whose South African roots inform his dynamic style in jazz, African and Brazilian music. Together, they combine virtuosity, creativity and international experience, delivering performances that are both technically brilliant and deeply expressive.
